Legal Aid

Yesterday I volunteered for Legal Aid of North Carolina.

I recommend to any attorney that they should volunteer some of their time for this worthy cause.  What you do is called “intake” and you call back prospective clients and get more details of their cases.  The volunteer attorney will spend from around 9 AM until 11:30 calling back these folks and then you share your impressions with the case manager, and then–the best part–you get to go to lunch!  You don’t have to provide any legal advice, although you usually will to some degree along the way.  The cases often involve landlord/tenant situations (some of them public housing) and collection issues.  Some folks have never been sued before and have no idea what to do.  Actually, most folks don’t know exactly what to do.  And for the volunteer attorneys, there are “cheat sheets” to help guide you in what questions to ask.

The clients are very appreciative and some just need someone to talk to.  As you can imagine, those with limited incomes often tend to have multiple difficulties and unfortunately are more likely it seems not to have a broad support system to help them out.

If you are an attorney and wish to volunteer, if you know someone who may qualify for Legal Aid’s services, or if you just want to learn more about what they do, you can click here.
